Secondary School Employment Strategies 2012 Saturday March 17 8:00-12:00, no additional charge for GLATA Symposium Registrants
This workshop, presented by the Secondary Schools Athletic Trainers Committee has been re-tooled to meet the economic challenges the high school athletic trainer and/or clinical-high school outreach athletic trainer face as school districts come to grips with an ever shrinking operating budget. This workshop will help the athletic trainer develop ideas and tools to show why the athletic training program is an important and vital “line item” on any school district budget. This workshop is not only extremely informative, but also entertaining. This team brings over 150 years of combined athletic training experience and represent different areas of the country, but what they all share in common is an unwavering passion for athletic training at the high school setting.
Utilizing Value Models to Demonstrate Your Worth Speaker: Linda Mazzoli, ATC
Linda Mazzoli, ATC, from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is a DYNAMIC speaker and will definitely get you thinking differently about your worth and value as an athletic trainer and how to begin to think of applying a monetary value to what you do. Linda has made me rethink how I approach stake holders, parents, administrators and coaches when it comes to describing what I do and the value (both monetarily and medically) of what I offer and do daily. Linda is provocative and has a great speaking style; she will definitely engage you, challenge you and make you think!..I promise you will walk away inspired after listening to her presentation.
How to Utilize PR and Marketing Tools to Highlight Your Program’s Effectiveness, Value and More Importantly…Worth
Speaker: Tony Fitzpatrick, ATC
Tony Fitzpatrick, ATC, from Timberline High School and the land of the Blue Turf, Boise, Idaho will talk to you about using Simple Public Relations tools to not only promote your high school program but also show you how simple things available to you from the NATA and other resources can be “re-packaged” to show the value of your program. Tony will give you the tools on how to use what you have available to sell your program. You won’t have to “re-invent” the wheel when it comes to promoting yourself and protecting your program. Tony will give you simple ideas that can help bring recognition to your program and make stake holders aware of what you do and the impact you have on student-athlete health.
How to Improve, Change or Defend Your Employment Situation Speaker: Mike Carroll, ATC

Mike will give you practical information that you can use to help improve your current situation. Mike has a great ability to speak to our needs as a high school athletic trainer. You will also walk away with some new "Texas Vocabulary" Mike is entertaining and funny. Ask him about the difference between "Y'All" and "All Y'All"
Keep Your Position…Establishing Your Value Within the Secondary School Community
Speaker: Brian Robinson, ATC
Brian Robinson, ATC, from Glenbrook South High School in Glenview, Illinois, is the chair of the NATA Secondary Schools Athletic Trainers Committee and brings years of experience and knowledge to the table. Brian is not only a leader in our profession, but also a strong and vocal advocate for the high school setting athletic trainer. It doesn't matter if you are just starting out as an athletic trainer in the high school setting, or like me, have been around the block a few times, Brian will provide you with some ideas on how to improve your athletic training program. Brian will show how collecting injury, treatment and "hallway evaluations" has proven the “value” of an athletic trainer in his local school community but also has improved his budget and increased his staff during this economic downturn.
Boards, Budgets and Effective Strategies Speaker: Tanya Dargusch, ATC
Tanya Dargusch, ATC, from Washington Township High School in Sewell, New Jersey brings a unique perspective on how to “interpret” the personalities of your school board and other educational decision makers. Tanya will give you the tools to understand the challenges that school boards are faced with when making budget decisions in the current fiscal climate. Tanya has great insight to the various types of school district demographics; she’ll teach you to create and tailor your strategies for negotiating and presenting credible arguments when it comes time to protect your position or request change. Tanya easily connects with meeting participants with her presentation style. Tanya recently had to defend the existence of her program in front of the Washington Township BOE, which had voted to cut her assistant’s position. The BOE voted to reverse their original decision.
