Charles “Chuck” Badcock
June 7, 1927 – May 14, 2007  

Chuck Badcock, AT Ret., a founding member of the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association, died in May after a brief illness. He was 79 years old.

One of six children, Badcock was raised in St. John’s, Newfoundland. He served in the Merchant Navy and fought in the Atlantic during World War II. Subsequently, Badcock joined the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps and served in the Korean War. While posted to Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory, he met and married his wife, Jo. Their three daughters were born in Whitehorse during separate postings there.

After training as a physiotherapist, Badcock worked for seven years as head sports therapist at the Royal Military College in Kingston. Upon retiring from the military, he spent ten years as the athletic trainer for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and 11 years with the Winnipeg Jets. Badcock, who joined the NATA in 1965, became a highly regarded sports therapist in Canada. He helped establish CATA in 1966 and was its long-serving secretary/treasurer. He was chosen to be an athletic trainer for the Olympics in Saskatchewan, for the Commonwealth Games in New Zealand and for several NHL All-Star hockey games. In recognition of his lifelong contribution to sports, Badcock was inducted to the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jo; and by his five siblings.

Badcock is survived by three daughters, Shirley, Dale and Lois, and their families; one sister, Gladys; and his extended family in CATA and the world of sports.
