Mission Statement: The Mission of the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers Association (GLATA) Student Senate (GSS) is to organize educational programs and opportunities to meet the needs of the GLATA students, and to develop the athletic training leaders of tomorrow.

GLATA Influential Individuals Project

"Leaders become great, not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others" - John Maxwell

The GLATA Influential Individuals Project aims to recognize individuals within the athletic training profession in the US and within District 4 that have made an impact on our profession, and has helped shape what it is today. We hope to educate GLATA Students about these individuals, and provide them the opportunity to network and reach out to these professionals.

Madison  Roskuszka (MI)

Madison Roskuszka (MI)

Chair

Madison is from Winfield, IL and graduated from Wheaton North High School. She is currently finishing her junior year at Hope College in Holland, MI. Madison serves as the Chair of the GLATA Student Senate. As the Chair of the GSS, Madison is responsible for leading and overseeing meetings along with  all activities of the GLATA Student Senate. She also communicates with the GLATA Executive Board by providing updates of the Student Senate’s activities, ideas, and student programming . Madison  has worked with Hope College  football, women’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s lacrosse, softball and a local high school.  She is also a MATS Student Committee member and is an active member of the Hope College Athletic Training Student Council. In her free time, Madison enjoys spending time with family and friends as well as cheering on all her favorite Chicago sports teams. Madison plans to attend graduate school for her Masters in Athletic Training after graduating from Hope. She plans to start working as a clinician in the collegiate setting, eventually earning her PhD and working as a professor.

Vice Chair

Becky is from Fraser, Michigan and is currently finishing up her sophomore year at Saginaw Valley State University in Saginaw, Michigan. Becky serves as Vice Chair where she assists the Chair as well as the other members of GSS throughout the year. She also facilitates the collection and distribution of monthly committee and state reports before conference calls and organizes the Alumni GSS contact information for future reference. During her clinical rotations, Becky has worked alongside two high schools in Michigan including both Bay City Western High School and Bay City Central High School while also riding along two 12 hour Mobile Medical Response shifts (EMS). During her college rotations she has worked with SVSU Football, Track & Field, and Baseball. Outside of her athletic training program Becky works for SVSU Campus Recreation where she organizes and supervises club sport practices and games. In her free time, she loves rollerblading through Michigan’s beautiful lake paths, going on adventures, traveling abroad, and of course attending or watching as many Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Tigers games as possible. After graduating, Becky hopes to continue her education with a GA position.

Secretary

Marin is from Wauseon, Ohio, and is currently completing her junior year at Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio. On the GLATA Student Senate, she serves as secretary and an Ohio representative. As secretary, Marin records meeting minutes and creates the GSS Newsletters, and serves as a liaison between the OATA Student Senate and the GLATA Student Senate as the Ohio representative. As an athletic training student at Heidelberg, Marin has worked with Heidelberg football, men's soccer, softball, and a local high school. Outside of athletic training, she enjoys reading, running, and painting. After graduation, Marin plans to work as an athletic training GA while earning a Master's degree.

Treasurer

Julia is from Chicago Ridge, IL and graduated from Harold L. Richards High School. She is currently finishing her sophomore year at Millikin University in Decatur, IL. As Treasurer, Julia works with the Executive Board Treasurer to work on the budget for the GSS and communicates to the GSS about reimbursements. Julia has worked with women’s soccer, football and wrestling while at Millikin University. She is also a IATA Student Committee member and is a First Year Experience Mentor for incoming freshman at Millikin University. In her free time, Julia enjoys spending time with friends watch the Chicago Cubs and listening to new music. Julia plans to attend graduate school for her Masters in Athletic Training after graduating from Millikin, eventually attending school for Physical Therapy.

GLATA Quiz Bowl Co-Coordinator

Bianca is from Fond du Lac, WI. She graduated from Fond du Lac High School and is currently a junior in the athletic training program at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. As one of the quiz bowl co-coordinators, she helps create athletic training specific questions, plan the event and set up the venue. Bianca has worked clinically at several high schools in the Oshkosh area and with the UW Oshkosh football, track and field, and women’s basketball teams. Outside of school, she enjoys playing soccer and golf, cooking, and being with family. Bianca’s future plan is going to graduate school for her Master’s Degree in Athletic Training, and to someday work for a professional women’s soccer team.

Student Education Program Coordinator

Aaron is originally from a very small town in east-central Wisconsin named Tilleda, WI. He went to high school at Bowler High School, participated at the varsity level in Football, Basketball, Track and Field, and graduated as Salutatorian. He is a Sophomore in the Athletic Training Program at the University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point. Aaron hold the position of Winter Meeting Co-Coordinator, he work with two other individuals and help plan the student education program for GLATA. Aaron has had the following rotations (All DIII @ UWSP besides the high school): Women's Volleyball, Men's Hockey, Women's Basketball, and A High School Rotation at Weyauwega- Fremont High School. His favorite rotation is between Women's Volleyball and Men's Hockey (because he learned so much about the sports and the athletes vary so much personality wise). His hobbies outside of Athletic Training include: hunting, fishing, spending time with family, participating in intramural sports, his fraternity (Phi Sigma Phi- Kappa Chapter), and most of all watching sports; college basketball in particular. His plans after graduation would be to get a GA position and hopefully work with men's hockey or men's basketball. After that, Aaron would love to be a collegiate Athletic Trainer for Men's Basketball.

Webmaster/Public Relations

Erin is from New Berlin, WI and is currently finishing up her junior year at Winona State University in Winona, MN. Erin serves as the Webmaster and Public Relations Coordinator. As Webmaster, Erin coordinates with the GLATA Web Team to update the student section of the GLATA website and keep students in District IV informed. She also manages the GLATA Students Facebook and Twitter accounts. As public relations appointee, Erin communicates with students throughout District IV regarding athletic training fundraisers, programs, and activities. Clinically, Erin has worked with the WSU football, Women’s basketball, Women’s soccer, and track teams. Her hobbies outside of athletic training includes spending time with friends and family, playing sports, being outdoors, and listening to music. Erin hopes to get a GA position after she graduates to get her Master’s Degree and eventually work in the Military/Law Enforcement setting.

Jackie is currently a Junior attending Bethel University in St. Paul MN. She graduated from St. Francis High School and lived in St. Francis MN. Along with majoring in Athletic Training, she is also minoring in Leadership and Psychology. Having the role of Sponsorship and Donations Co-Coordinator, she works with different companies, athletic training education programs, and various organizations throughout District 4. For Jackie’s Senior rotation she will be working with Bethel Universities Men’s Hockey, and University of Minnesota Men’s Gymnastics team. Outside of school, she enjoys riding and training horses, working with children of various ages at a summer horse camp, playing any sport, and hanging out with my friends and family. When she graduates from Bethel University, Jackie plans on continuing her education by attending graduate school while working in a GA position. Her future goal is to work as an Athletic Trainer for the Olympic Training Center.

Jake is from Vernon Hills, Illinois and graduated from Vernon Hills High School in 2014. He is currently a Junior athletic training student at Illinois State University. Jake was previously with Illinois Wesleyan University's football team and is currently with Normal community high school. He plans to complete both of his internships this summer with the University of Alabama's football team and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He previously served as the Career Roundtable Coordinator/General Workshop Coordinator and transitioned to Sponsorship & Donations Co-coordinator for the GLATA Student Senate. In his free time, Jake loves watching all sports but most specifically football and baseball. He hopes to contribute to a football team at the collegiate or professional level in the future and stay involved with GLATA after his term is completed on the GLATA Student Senate.

Connor is from Fort Wayne, Indiana. He graduates in May 2017 from the University of Indianapolis with his BS in Athletic Training. Beginning in June 2017 Connor will be a student in the Doctorate of Athletic Training at Indiana State University. He will serve as a graduate assistant athletic trainer working with Men's Basketball. In his free time, Connor enjoys the outdoors, traveling, hanging out with friends, and golfing. As for long term goals, Connor would love to be involved with athletic training education or become and entrepreneur in athletic training.

Robert is from Crown Point, IN and graduated from Lake Central High School in 2015. Robert is currently a sophomore at Indiana State University. On the GLATA Student Senate, he serves as one of the Student Education Program Coordinators. As part of the position, Robert is in charge of planning the Career Roundtable Event and reaching out to speakers for the student program. In addition to the GLATA Student Senate, Robert serves as an IATA student representative. Currently Robert is working with the women’s volleyball team at Indiana State, but he has also worked with local high schools. Outside of athletic training, he enjoys listening to music and doing arts and crafts. After graduation, Robert hopes to one day work with a Big 10 university while still staying involved in GLATA.

Quiz Bowl Co-Coordinator

Carolyn hails from Pittsburgh, PA and is completing her third year in the Athletic Training program at the University of Cincinnati where she serves as the Vice President of the UC athletic training student organization. Carolyn also serves at the President Elect of the OATA Student Senate. As a GLATA Quiz Bowl Co-Coordinator, she is responsible for the organization and planning of the annual event. Carolyn has spent semesters completing clinical work with UC Football, Seton High School, UC College Conservatory of Music’s Ballet Department, UC Track & Field, Cincinnati Ballet, and has an upcoming internship with the Harkness Center for Dance Injuries in New York City.  As a lifelong ballet dancer, Carolyn’s hobbies include teaching ballet classes.   She plans to attend graduate school for her Masters in Athletic Training to pursue a career in the performing arts.

NATA SLC District IV Representative

Kacey is from Indianapolis, Indiana, where he graduated from Decatur Central High School. He is currently finishing his Junior year in the Bachelor's Athletic Training Program at Indiana State University. Kacey serves on the Student Senate as the District IV Representative to the National Athletic Training Association (NATA) Student Leadership Committee. He acts as a liaison between the District's Senate and the NATA Student Leadership Committee to help facilitate fluid communication between the District and National levels. He has provided clinical care to Indiana State University (D1) Football, Indiana State University (D1) Cheer and Dance, DePauw University (DIII) Football, Terre Haute South Vigo High School, Indiana State Women’s basketball (D1) and Terre Haute North Vigo High School. Kacey plans to obtain a GA position following graduation and complete a Master's degree in Athletic Training. He hopes to work in Division I athletics after completing his coursework.

Advisor

Over the past 10 years, Dr. Bates has served in a variety of roles including Associate Dean of Health Sciences, Professional AT Program Director, Chair of the AT Department and Associate Professor of Athletic Training and Health Science at Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio.
 
Clinically, he has been a medical volunteer for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon since 2008 and has provided clinical care for patients as an AT in a variety of settings.
 
Prior to becoming a GSS advisor, he served two terms as the OATA Vice President of Internal Association Affairs working alongside the Ohio Student Senate, Young Professionals, Secondary Schools, and Revenue committees.  Currently, Dr. Bates also serves as a member of the OATA Committee on Diversity and Inclusion and the Secondary Schools Committee.  In 2017, Dr. Bates was named the Linda Weber Daniel Outstanding Mentor by the OATA.  
 
Professionally, Dr. Bates is excited to start a new chapter of his career as he takes on the role of Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty at Mercy College of Ohio in Toledo, Ohio.  He will also hold academic rank of Associate Professor in the School of Allied Health Sciences.
 
Dr. Bates' main goal as an advisor to the GSS is to contribute to developing AT students on their journey to become intellectually and emotionally intelligent professionals.  
 
Personally, Dr. Bates is a Chicago (IL) native, is one of many siblings, loves to travel and is a very proud husband to Kassandra and father to Ethan and Liam.

Advisor

Alyssa Anderson is an Assistant Professor of Athletic Training and Clinical Education Coordinator at North Park University in Chicago. She holds degrees from North Park University (BS) and Ohio University (MS). At North Park, Alyssa is also the athletic trainer for the women’s softball team and a member of the Presidential search committee. Professionally, she serves as the Region 1 Representative for the Illinois Athletic Trainers’ Association Young Professionals Committee. Alyssa loves traveling – she went to Kenya in 2016 as the athletic trainer for an Athletes in Action women’s basketball team. She is excited to be a sounding board for the GSS and hopes to encourage students as they discover what life-work balance looks like for them.

Athletic Trainers play an important role in the health and safety of athletes. However, that role too often goes unnoticed and many Athletic Trainers do not receive the recognition they deserve.
